If you do not know the dose you must take, consult your doctor.¿What is Isoflavone? An estrogen-like substance made by some plants, including the soy plant. Soy isoflavones are being studied in the prevention of cancer, hot flashes that occur with menopause, and osteoporosis (loss of bone density).¿What is the most important information I should know about Isoflavone?Isoflavone are chemical compounds found in soy and other plants that are phytoestrogens, or plant-derived estrogens. They have a chemical structure that is similar to the estrogens naturally produced by the body, but their effectiveness as an estrogen has been estimated to be much lower than true estrogens. Two types of isoflavones, genistein and daidzein, are found in soy beans, chick peas, and lentils, and are considered to be the most potent estrogens of the phytoestrogens. Still, the estrogen potency of phytoestrogens is estimated to be only 1/1000 to 1/100,000 of that of estradiol, natural estrogen. Some studies have shown that these compounds can help relieve the symptoms of menopause, and many women do use soy products to help control the symptoms of menopause. In particular, women who have had breast cancer and do not want to take hormone therapy (HT) with estrogen sometimes use soy products for relief of menopausal symptoms. However, some phytoestrogens can actually have anti-estrogenic properties in certain situations, and the overall risks of these preparations have not yet been determined. For example, researchers have shown that long-term use of phytoestrogens in postmenopausal women led to an increase in endometrial hyperplasia (overgrowth of the tissues lining the uterus) which can be a precursor to cancer. Further research is needed to fully characterize the safety and potential risks of phytoestrogens. There is also a perception among many women that these products are "natural" and therefore safer than HT, but this has never been proven scientifically. If you are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms of menopause, your doctor can help you decide what type of treatment is appropriate for your individual situation.¿What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Isoflavone? It is important for you to tell your prescriber or health care professional or other health care provider that you are using soy isoflavones. Some herbs exert potent effects and may interact with other drugs you are taking. You should discuss soy isoflavones with your health care professional BEFORE taking them if you have any of these conditions:* breast cancer * difficulty with urination * hepatic disease * kidney disease * prostate cancer * taking any type of male or female hormone treatments * thyroid disease * an unusual or allergic reaction to soy, soybeans, peanuts or other legumes, plants or herbs, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives * pregnant or trying to get pregnant * breast-feeding ¿How should I take Isoflavone?Soy isoflavone supplements should be taken orally (i.e., swallowed) and taken with food or meals. Follow the directions on the package label, or talk to your health care professional. Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this herb in children. Special care may be needed.¿What happens if I miss a dose?Missing a dose is probably not harmful. If you miss a dose, simply resume taking it on your previous schedule. Do not take double doses to catch up, however.¿What happens if I overdose?Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine.¿What should I avoid while taking Isoflavone?Since soy isoflavones are derived from a plant, allergic reactions are possible. Stop using this herb if you develop a rash. You may want to see your health care professional, or inform them that this occurred. Different brands of soy isoflavones might contain different amounts of active ingredient. It is recommended that you use a brand from a reliable manufacturer and one that has been standardized. A standardized product is more likely to contain the same amount of herb from dose to dose. Your health care professional or pharmacist can assist you in finding a product. If you are scheduled to have surgery, let your surgeon know you are taking soy isoflavones. Isoflavone side effects For individuals who are not allergic to soy, no serious short-term or long-term side effects have been reported from eating soy foods. Common mild side effects include stomach aches, constipation, and diarrhea. Soybeans also contain moderate amounts of a natural substance called purine. Purines can make gout worse. Persons with gout should not eat alot of soy products.¿What other drugs will affect Isoflavone?Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.¿Where can I get more information?* Your pharmacist has additional information about Isoflavone written for health professionals that you may read.Orders are sent by Registered Air Mail.
