¿What is Sodium Valproate?

Sodium Valproate is used to control seizures, particularly in primary generalised epilepsy. It may be used in all forms of epilepsy.Sodium Valproate may also be used in mania (as a mood stabiliser), migraine prevention, and trigeminal neuralgia.

¿What is the most important information I should know about Sodium Valproate?

* Always give the medicine as prescribed by your doctor
* In certain circumstances, medicines may be prescribed for a child outside the age range recommended by the manufacturer. Medicines are often used “off licence†in children because trial data are not available for a specific use, for example, age. This is not necessarily hazardous but should be explained and agreed before use. Your doctor will explain this further to you.
* Where possible, make sure that the same brand is always used as the effectiveness can vary from one brand to another.
* Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving your child any other medicines, including herbal or complementary medicines.
* If you miss a dose of the medicine and you remember up to four hours afterwards, give the forgotten dose immediately. If you remember at or near the time that the next dose is due, just give your child the usual dose.
* If your child vomits within a short time of taking a dose and you are able to see the tablet in the vomit, then give the dose again. If you cannot see the tablet, do not give it again.
* If your child has been taking the medicine regularly, do not stop it suddenly without advice. Your doctor may need to reduce the dose gradually.
* If your child stops using a medicine or it passes its expiry date, please return it to your pharmacist. Do not flush it down the toilet or throw it away.
* Some anti-epilepsy medicines can affect an unborn baby if taken during pregnancy. Please discuss this with your doctor.
* Keep medicines in a safe place where children cannot see or reach them.
* Keep medicines at room temperature, away from bright light or direct sunlight, and away from heat.
* Always check that you have enough medicine and remember to order a new prescription in plenty of time.

¿What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Sodium Valproate?

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies to:
* Any other medicines, especially anticonvulsants
* Any other substances, such as foods, preservatives or dyes Tell your doctor if you drink alcohol. If you have more than 2 drinks per day, you may be putting yourself at risk of a seizure, or fit. If you are a female patient of child-bearing age, make sure that you talk to your doctor about the risks associated with taking Sodium Valproate during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you have or have had any medical conditions, especially the following:
* liver problems (hepatic insufficiency, hepatic damage)
* kidney problems
* urea cycle disorders
* ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant.Sodium Valproate may affect your developing baby if taken in the first trimester of pregnancy, as it is suspected of causing an increased risk of malformations in the exposed fetus. However, do not stop taking Sodium Valproate unless your doctor says so as there are risks to the mother and child from uncontrolled epilepsy or uncontrolled mania episodes. Your doctor may want to adapt your treatment and/or prescribe dietary supplements of folate. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding or plan to breast-feed. Drugs used in the treatment of epilepsy, including Sodium Valproate, may be absorbed into the breast milk. Your doctor will discuss the possible risks and benefits of using Sodium Valproate during breast-feeding. If you have not told your doctor or pharmacist about any of the above, tell them before you start to take Sodium Valproate.

¿How should I take Sodium Valproate?

The tablets should be swallowed with at least half a glass of water whilst sitting or standing, so that they reach your stomach and do not stick in your throat. It is especially important that you swallow ‘enteric coated’ tablets or capsules (all except the 100mg ‘Sodium Valproate’) whole and do not crush or chew them. The coating helps to prevent any stomach upsets that could occur. Crushing or chewing will cause the drug to be released too soon and you may get some side effects. Sodium alproate tablets which are not enteric coated (i.e. ‘Sodium Valproate’ 100mg) may be crushed if necessary. Taking fizzy drinks (e.g. colas) with the 100mg tablets and syrups may lead to more stomach upsets. If this happens, it may be best not to drink too many fizzy drinks.

¿What happens if I miss a dose?

Start again as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose, then go on as before. Do not try to catch up by taking two or more doses at once as you may get more side effects. If you are ill and vomit after taking your valproate, you should take that dose again. You should tell your doctor about either of these next time you meet. Missing a dose can cause your fits to return. The amount in your blood may drop below the level needed to control your fits. If you have problems remembering your doses (as very many people do) ask you pharmacist, doctor or nurse about this. There are some special packs, boxes and devices which can be used to help you remember.

¿What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention. If you take too much Sodium Valproate you may feel dizzy, drowsy or have cramps in the abdomen.

¿What should I avoid while taking Sodium Valproate?

Do not give Sodium Valproate to anyone else even if their symptoms seem similar to yours or if they have the same condition as you. Do not take Sodium Valproate to treat any other complaints unless your doctor tells you to. Do not stop taking Sodium Valproate or lower your dose without checking with your doctor. Be careful driving or operating machinery until you know how Sodium Valproate affects you. Sodium Valproate may cause drowsiness or light-headedness in some people, especially at the beginning of treatment. Make sure you know how you react to Sodium Valproate before you drive a car, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are drowsy or light headed. If this occurs do not drive. Children should not ride a bike, climb trees or do anything else that could be dangerous if they are feeling drowsy or sleepy.
